How to Praise God Through Prayer Using Psalm 145

How do we praise God through prayer? Have you ever spent your quiet time with the Lord wanting to just praise him? No unnecessary chit chat, just a desire to praise him for his awesomeness and power. During some of the times the words on our heart just pour out. At other times the words don’t come or seem inadequate at best.

When you are struggling to find the words to praise God through prayer, turn to your Bible. There are many prayers and verses on praise. Some are elegant. Some are simple. They are all beautiful and many times they capture exactly what is on our heart.

A Prayer of Praise Using Psalm 145

Psalm 145 is one example of how to praise God through prayer. I’ve borrowed this psalm when, for whatever reason, I find it difficult to express myself. It articulates the reasons we should praise the Lord, day after day forever and ever. It reminds us of His greatness and majesty, love and mercy, miracles and awesome power, and His faithfulness, loyalty, and righteousness.

When we cannot trust anything (or anyone) else in this world, we can depend on Him. We can trust Him always. He is with us in all circumstances. He will meet every need we have.

We have knowledge of Him passed down to us throughout generations and we must endeavor to continue to share this awesome knowledge to present and future generations.

I encourage you to look at this Psalm and read David’s words. Incorporate them into your own prayer of adoration and enjoy “praising the Lord” with all your heart!

Psalm 145 (Easy to Read Version)

Heavenly Father,

Please hear my prayer as I take this time to worship and praise you,

God is Great – Forever and Ever

1I will tell of your greatness, my God and King.
I will praise your name forever and ever.
Psalm 145:1 (ERV)

I will tell everyone of how great you are! You are my God and my King. You are my Father, Creator, Comforter, Healer, Teacher, Companion, Discipliner, Confessor, Forgiver, Sustainer, and Strengthener. Whoever, whenever, or wherever I need you, there you are. Surrounding me with your love, mercy, and grace. How can I not shout it from the rooftops (or highest mountain)? How can I keep it to myself? Please give me the passion, courage, and obedience to share your majesty with all the world!

Praise God Every Day

I will praise you every day.
I will praise your name forever and ever.
Psalm 145:2 (ERV)

Today and every day I praise you! I praise you for my past, present, and future. I praise you for my eternity. You are my eternity! Thank you for Jesus, who died on the cross for my sins. Thank you for making a way for salvation—my own and all mankind’s. How can you not be glorified? How can you not be praised? Your love is immeasurable, unfathomable, and unconditional. Teach me how to share this with others who need to know you. Give me wisdom to know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it.

God Deserves our Praise

The Lord is great and deserves all our praise!
No one can fully understand his greatness!
Psalm 145:3 (ERV)

You are great and wonderful and mighty and powerful. Although as mere mortals we cannot fully understand the depths of your majesty, you deserve all our praise and adoration. One thing we can be sure of is that you are our Heavenly Father, our Holy God, our faithful King!

All Generations Praise God – Past, Present & Future

Each generation will praise you
and tell the next generation about the great things you do.
Your majesty and glory are wonderful.
I will tell about your miracles.
People will tell about the amazing things you do,
and I will tell everyone how great you are.
They will talk about your goodness
    and sing about your justice.
Psalm 145:4-7 (ERV)

Just as we have learned from generations before us, I pray this generation will tell future generations about all the great things that you have done, are doing, and will do. We have proof of your majesty and greatness from the miracles of the past, present, and future. May we remember to share them. I pray your majesty and glory will shine through the haze of fear, doubt, and evil that permeates the land. You are a good, genuine, and just God. May we sing your praises forever!

God Loves Everyone

The Lord is kind and merciful,
    patient and full of love.
The Lord is good to everyone.
He shows his mercy to everything he made.
Psalm 145:8-9 (ERV)

Thank you for your kindness, mercy, patience, and love. We don’t have to earn it—just accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord. In your great mercy, you sent your Son to bear the burden of our sins because we could not bear our own. Yet you made a way. How we praise you! Christ defeated sin and rose again. Through his sacrifice, through his blood, we are saved! Praise be!

God’s Kingdom is Great

10 Lord, all you have made will give thanks to you.
Your loyal followers will praise you.
11 They will tell how great your kingdom is.
They will tell how great you are.
12 So others will learn about the mighty things you do,
about the glory of your kingdom—how marvelous it is!
Psalm 145:10-12 (ERV)

Thank you, Lord, for everything and everyone you have created. I praise you for the plan of salvation that you put into place through Jesus Christ, allowing believers to be saved and assured that we can spend eternity with you in your kingdom. I pray that believers everywhere will tell others how great you are and how mighty your kingdom is. As your children, we should make it our mission to share the gospel message with any who do not know you. We should be excited and enthusiastic to bring others to a greater knowledge and understanding of who you are, how much you love us, and how much you have done for us.

God’s Kingdom is Forever

13 Your kingdom will never end, and you will rule forever.

The Lord can be trusted in all that he says.
He is loyal in all that he does.
Psalm 145:13 (ERV)

Your kingdom will never end. We can trust everything you say. You are loyal and just, faithful to keep all your promises.

God Helps us in our Weakness

14 The Lord lifts up people who have fallen.
He helps those who are in trouble.
Psalm 145:14 (ERV)

You are our refuge and strength. You forgive those who have fallen short of your perfection, and look past our sinfulness and humanness to know our hearts. You know our needs and are faithful to help us with these needs. You stand by us when we are in trouble, even if we caused the trouble with our own selfishness and pride. You give us your strength when we are weak. We can depend on you.

God Meets all our Needs

15 All living things look to you for their food,
and you give them their food at the right time.
16 You open your hands
and give every living thing all that it needs.
Psalm 145:15-16 (ERV)

You are always with us, meeting all of our needs. We are secure and safe in the palm of your hand. (See John 10:29)

God is Dependable and Trustworthy

17 Everything the Lord does is good.
Everything he does shows how loyal he is.
Psalm 145:17 (ERV)

Everything you do is good. You are loyal, faithful, and true.

God is Always with His Children

18 The Lord is near to everyone
who sincerely calls to him for help.
Psalm 145:18 (ERV)

You are always near to us. Your Spirit lives within us. Jesus is our mediator and knows everything about us. Your love is unconditional. We just have to accept your gift of forgiveness and love and salvation.

God Answers Prayers

19 He listens to his followers and does what they want.
He answers their prayers and saves them.
Psalm 145:19 (ERV)

You answer our prayers. When we need you, we just ask. We are free to share our needs and the needs of those we love whenever we want. We are assured that you hear our prayers.

God is our Protector against Evil

20 The Lord protects everyone who loves him,
but he destroys all who do evil. Psalm 145:20 (ERV)

You protect us from the evil one. There is nothing he can do to take us away from you. We belong to you. He might make us miserable for a short while, but we have victory in you!

Praise God Forever and Ever

21 I will praise the Lord! Let everyone praise his holy name forever and ever!

Psalm 145:21 (ERV)

I praise you! You are holy and awesome, forgiving and just. You are Beauty, Majesty, Powerful, Almighty, Heavenly, and Holy. You are King and Creator. You are greatness itself. Let everyone praise your name forever and ever.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

I hope that using Psalm 145 as a guideline to praise God through prayer has inspired you in your own prayer of praise. Start here and add your own thoughts. Use your own words. Write your own Psalm!

Imagine how good it makes God feel when we stop thinking of ourselves long enough to just spend time praising Him!
